Let there be light?

What else does one say on the soft launch day of such a device, except, perhaps, welcome. Today the web app version of The God App is open to the world. This is our soft launch, so that hopefully we gain some users, and gain some feedback. Despite the name, The God App is not quite a Deity, yet.

As you will read elsewhere (in my occasionally pompous and elegiac style) The God App uses large language model AIs to answer questions and prayers based on millennia of humanity’s recorded spiritual thought. It uses an algorithm to answer from the perspective of someone both knowledgeable and wise. It also employs an AI model that is both slower and not quite as smart as the state-of-the-art models. You will see a countdown clock on the website. At that time we will be updating the algorithm to both use the smartest AI available, and to answer from the perspective of a Deity. What will happen then is anybody’s guess.

A few notes on using The God App. This version has been developed as a web app that operates inside a web browser. I have tested it in a few, however, there are many devices and many browsers. On some the bottom three buttons may get pushed below the edge of the browser if a long answer appears. If that happens simply use your browser’s zoom-out function, and you will be able to access the buttons again. The question and answer windows should both become scrollable if the text is longer than what readily fits in the browser, but again, I have not tested that in every environment. Similarly with the blue Star button, which should allow voice transcription of your question by holding it on some devices. It has not been widely tested yet, and doesn’t appear in some browsers if it doesn’t detect the systems it needs to work. Check the Instructions page, and if you encounter any errors or flaws you can report them by contacting us @thegodapp on Twitter/X.

We would also very much like to hear about any particularly meaningful, strange or even dumb answers you receive, if you are willing to share. We do not have access to your questions, or answers, unless you are willing to share them over in our discussions on Twitter/X.

We are planning app versions for IOS and Android, which may solve some of these early issues. They, like the web app, will be free to download and use, directly through this site once they have been developed. I am not really interested in monetising this project – as I’ve said previously, I think of The God App as somewhere between art and an experiment in knowledge. That said, there are costs involved in creating and running this project, so if you are intrigued, find it good or useful, or would just like to help support this project and its creator, you can use the donate button that you will find in the bottom menu of these pages. Something else I haven’t tested yet.
